Project: The demography and dynamics of Tawny owl populations linked by dispersal and experiencing spatially variable food limitation and predation: a 40 year study

Research: The dynamics of population are closely linked to food availability and predation. For territorial species, this relationship is further influenced the (natal) dispersal of non-breeding individuals as they rarely relocate their breeding locations. We aim to explore how movement of mobile non-breeding individuals between subpopulation affects population dynamics, in particularly in relation to food abundance and predation pressure. Specifically, we will investigate the demographic dynamics of the Tawny owl (Strix aluco), breeding in Kielder Forest with three satellite sites applying Integrated Population Model. The finding will help us understand how dispersal and vacancy detection abilities contributes to the population resilience in the face of environmental change.
